Victorian sterling silver pair of wine coasters by Robert Garrard II, London, 1856.
An exceptional pair of sterling silver wine coasters by Robert Garrard II (Silversmith to the Queen and King of Great Britain). This striking pair is circular in shape, with alternating creations of figures representing Dionysus (Greek) or Bacchus (Roman) - the gods of wine and ecstasy, and grapes and grape leaves in league with the theme of wine. Their bases have silver (instead of the usual wooden ones) - this is yet another example of Robert Garrard II fine attention to detail and exceptional craftsmanship. Their bases still have the original green baize underneath.
